The main objective of this day is to spread awareness and educate people about the adverse effects of tobacco on their health through smoking.

This year the Prohibition of Smoking Day or No Smoking Day is falling on 09 March. The day is inspired by No Tobacco Day and is observed majorly in the United Kingdom.
History of No Smoking Day -:
No Smoking Day was first observed in the year 1984 on Ash Wednesday in the Republic of Ireland. Earlier, it was celebrated on the first Wednesday of March as it began on Ash Wednesday. However, with time, it shifted to the second Wednesday. Now, it is celebrated as an annual event throughout the United Kingdom and other countries as well.
Throughout the 1920s, medical reports linked smoking to deadly illnesses like cancer. Since then, several initiatives have been launched around the world to persuade smokers to quit their habit.
The day started with an aim to help addicted smokers to quit smoking forever.

The tobacco plant was brought to India by the Portuguese in 1608 AD.
